You never know if the individual in charge of the tasks hates what they do, you don’t want something done halfway when it comes to your business. Be careful when hiring someone; you don’t want just anyone working on your projects. You want someone whos good at what they do. Have a business blog for views, products, and sales – this, to me, is the bread and butter to your website. Having a blog for your business shows customers/clients that you’re on top of things and want to let them know what’s going on in your industry. In these blog posts, you can make as long or as short as you’d like them to be. It’s shown that long-form (1,000-2,000 words) performs better than the standard 500-word post. When I write a blog post, I like to brainstorm and let the client and I flow. I then make sure to do extensive research on the topic. There are no fluff words like “the,” “and,” and “So.” scattered about the posts I write, so it’s wholly fluffed free.

Social media content – with so many people on social media these days, it’s easy to get caught up in the trend. The truth is social media is a powerhouse for your business and brand. You can get out there to your followers and even onboard clients. This one should also be your secret weapon, along with blog posts. Social media makes it easy to progress by letting you schedule posts, tag posts, and share your recent event, product, or promotion. 

Word of mouth – if you’re striving for local business, then this is the way to go! You can get testimonies from locals that you can put on your website or brochures. Also, ask your friends and families for referrals; you never know who might need your services.

Facebook & Instagram stories – I wanted to group these as they both contain stories. I want to talk to you as a friend so I’m not going to throw you a sales pitch. If I didn’t have a blog for my newly started freelance business I’d be up the creek without both paddles; oh and there is a hole in the boat.

A blog helps you stand out from your local or online competitors by showing off your experience and getting eyes on the content you value most. A blog is a great way to show off your business, highlight your products, or bring attention to your upcoming events. 

The more blog content you create (I can help with that) the more views you’ll get on your site, thus getting even more of a steady stream of locals through the door and out as a happy customer/client.

Using keywords associated with your brand will help you show up in Google rankings meaning you’ll also show up in search engines. A blog will provide a perfect platform to maximize your SEO strategy.

You may be thinking “well Leslie (yes, you can call me that.) what exactly is an SEO?” SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which helps the process of increasing the quantity and quality of a web page or website. I know what you’re thinking, this sounds a bit sketchy and wrong. It’s not! In order to know what is going to work for your business you can improve upon what other businesses are already working with. The truth is some of your competitors may already have their eyes on you too.

This isn’t copy cating because you’re not taking their idea and running with it, you have to add your own spin to it to make this work; truly make it your own.

As a business the biggest struggle is finding those new clients or brands/blogs to work with. Right now is the best time to start a business because the internet and platforms like Blogger or self hosted sites like WordPress (I use WordPress because everything is customizable and affordable, no breaking the bank here) are great ways to get your website started. The challenges can quickly arise if you don’t have a content strategy (believe me I know, I was merely treading water for months without one). This means there are a lot of competitors you’ll be up against, so do the best research you can to get ahead of the curve.

A content strategy is a plan you create to create planning, delivery, creation of content and how you use it. You want your content to consist of words, images, and multimedia to ensure you have well structured and usable content. The goal of a content strategy is to create sustainable content that is cohesive, meaningful, and also engaging.

These ideas are set forth if you choose to go at this alone – like a lone ranger. You could also choose to have a content strategist down the road once you follow these tips and start rocking it! I totally believe in you! So lets give you the competitive edge and dig our heels into these tips!

Use tools to monitor SEO and traffic to your competitors website – this step can be done using tools such as Alexa, SpyFu, MozBar, and Semrush are a few sites to help get you started which helps you find out other sites SEO strategy, keywords, and URL searches you’ll find useful. You’ll also find new competitors you had no idea you had, compare your website against others, find other low key competition keywords that can help you rank better. That is why these tools are so helpful and can help skyrocket your business. 
  2. Monitoring a competitors content strategy is another great way to give a little healthy competition – Use social media to help raise your brands awareness, customer engagement, and even convert sales. With social media being a huge part of any business once you understand where they are spending their time and money you’ll have a quick handle on where your business could use a little extra help then implement ways to bridge the gap. 

Here are a few things you should find out when putting together your business or blogs content strategy: Check out the platforms your competitors are using, check their engagements, what type of content they are posting, mentions, and tags. This can give you an idea of which platforms will perform better for your business or blog. Don’t use this information to strictly copy their brand but as i said to help improve. 

  1. Identify your competitors – These brands/blogs can be put into two different categories:

Indirect competitors – These are businesses that develop services, solutions, or products that can compete with yours. These companies are important because these are your strongest competitors, you’re both fulfilling a need. Focus on the problem you can solve or your clients/customers and not just your business.

Direct competitors – The competitors that are in the same category as you are considered your direct competitors. 

  1. Take note of your competitions evolutions – Previous online data provides a ton of information too. Understanding their previous strategy helps give light to what backfired or what worked for that specific company. This can shed light on how your competitors connected with their audience and how their site got links.

It all sounds like a slippery slope but I can assure you a little digging can help your business a lot! There is no need to fall into the rabbit hole with this one though. Too much information specially all at once will just leave you dazed and confused and even more overwhelmed than when you started.

Why Did I Become A Freelance Writer?

Why did I become a freelance writer you ask (or didn’t) I’ll explain but first you have to know a bit of the back story.

When I was a kid, even in elementary school I loved two subjects; English and reading. I know, weird right?

Who likes writing those paragraphs and reading those books? 👉🏼this girl👈🏼

I got so excited when the book fair would arrive, I’d buy a stack of books to jam into my book bag that I couldn’t wait to read through the weekend.

One of my favorite hobbies besides reading new books is reading books I’ve previously already read.

I like to fill my bookshelf so I don’t buy Kindle or Audiobooks. I know it sounds really weird but i love the smell of books too.

I told you that to tell you this; I fell in love with words as a child before I even knew what love was.

As I got older I wrote in a journal everyday, wrote poetry, and oftentimes those words got me in a lot of trouble and even broke my heart on a few occasions.

Why did I become a freelance writer?

I became a freelance writer to help companies find and use their words in a voice that talks to their readers.

You’d be surprised how many voices writing can entail. There’s friendly, sales pitches, informational. It’s all about the writer’s tone.

I love so much to get testimonials back about how my article or blog post helped a client with their business or converted visitors into buyers.

Think of it this way, whatever brings you the most joy, that is what writing feels like to me.

I love taking words and twisting them into a masterpiece that is a sentence. Some masterpieces are art, others are cars, relationships, or homes but to me it’s words.

In 2017, I tried starting a writing business but i had a full time job and things weren’t working out with trying to grow it and working 55+ hours a week so I let it fall to the wayside.

In recent months I’ve felt it nagging at me to give it a try again. I’m working part time now so I’ll have more time to grow it, let it prosper to become what it’s intended to be.

It’s a little harder than I first remember I’ll admit, with all the different hats everyday and trying to figure out the perfect business plan. I’m not completely there yet but I can’t wait to write great content for the clients I get.

If I have one piece of advice for new freelancers and entrepreneurs it’s to take it slow at first, it’s not a race to the finish. To do it right the first time is better than having to go over to do it again (believe me I know). Take each day one step at a time with your growth of social platforms because trying to do them all at once will certainly burn you out. Enjoy what you do!

  2. Evergreen content – evergreen content is content that never goes out of style so to speak. It is true content that can be seen over and over with very little update. 
  3. Making content actionable – If you make your contact actionable like adding a newsletter, quiz, or cheatsheet your visitors will have something that will remind them of your brand and website.
  4. Focus on a strong headline – strong headlines draw in attention to your article/blog post. This is what a visitor will be seeing before they even get to your content that follows. An attention grabbing headline is a must.
  5. Provide answers to your customers/clients – designing your blog post around questions is a great way to provide your clients/customers with answers. You can come right out with these questions or you can hide them within the post and simply give answers throughout the article/blog post.
  6. Link other sources which will only help Google’s search engines figure out what your site is all about – Google is your number one priority. If you can’t be found on Google then it’ll be hard for your new clients/customers to find you. You’ll want to use relevant keywords and sprinkle them throughout the article/blog post. These keywords help your SEO which makes you searchable and also able to be found.
  7. Create thought provoking content – creating thought provoking content gets the client/customer thinking about the topic you’ve chosen. This will help your business by keeping prospects on your site to search around and eventually end up on your product or services page.
  8. People love stories, leave readers with a few questions so they can implement the information they’ve just read on your site – This is a little similar to the tip above and i know it contradicts number 5 but let me explain. Leaving visitors with questions will also make them think about the problem they have and they need solving. When you execute number 5 later in the post they’ll have the answers to their questions.
  9. Create continual updates to your website’s blog – creating new content for your site helps give more information in each post without having one huge run on article/post. Your visitors will also know you are active on your website, wanting to help solve the problem they are facing.
  10. Provide answers – Add a FAQ article/blog post to help answer those gnawing questions your visitors might have about either your product or service. This will also let the visitor know they can contact you and get feedback when they have questions needing answers.
